Too much talk of licensing for fishing, fighting to be able to - TopicsExpress

Too much talk of licensing for fishing, fighting to be able to fish off Niihau, protection of traditional farming using modern technology (which sounds a bit conflicting to me). In 2012 the population of Hawaii stood at a little over 1.3 million. Prior to European contact the estimated number of Kanaka Oiwi was approximately 1.5 million people. The Hawaiians lived for hundreds of years in these islands without a diminished supply of resources. By 1878 the population of Hawaiians dwindled to approximately 50,000 and today there is less than 8,000 Piha Kanaka Maoli. The abundance of sea life has diminished proportionately with the Hawaiians. Foreign diseases, pollutants and farming practices has taken a major toll on our land, sea, resources and people. Hawaiians have the lowest life expectancy compared to all other ethnic groups and make up the largest population of inmates in the states correctional system. We are the minority on our native lands but the majority in prison. It wasnt the Hawaiian way to venture out of our own Ahupuaa to gather food. Our way was to promote sustainable practices assuring that we would not be without fish from the ocean or food from the land within our own boundaries. If your territory ran out of food that was your problem. What did you do to prevent it from happening? But in modern times with non-kanaka mentality, if our grounds are all over hunted or over fished, we go take from somebody elses cause as public access! And what makes it worse, they take from one territory to sell in another! It has nothing to do with sustenance anymore! At this rate there will be nothing for future generations. I come from a family of hunter/gatherers, mauka/makai. We live on what the land and sea provides. But for the sake of future generations and in respect of our ancestors I would do what King Kamehameha did. Ban any fishing for 6 month intervals. We have more imported food and less people than in ancient times. We have no excuse for people going hungry or waters being over fished. Get back to your roots Kanaka.
