Too often a doctors appointment is already a no-win situation for a person with Down syndrome: valid health concerns are brushed aside with we often see this in Down syndrome sometimes even affecting treatment, but now we must also realize that if a person with Down syndrome is not able to succinctly and coherently lay out their situation they might not be listened to at all. Doctors and nurses label this approach “veterinary medicine.” In other words, just as for an animal that can’t speak for itself, they order tests rather than talk to patients who are perceived as being “slow” or “difficult.” These patients often receive inadequate care: Either doctors can’t see past the disability and attribute all problems to it, or they fail to acknowledge the true impact of these impairments. These are people who are very *aware* of Down syndrome and its implications. washingtonpost/national/health-science/for-people-with-disabilities-doctors-are-not-always-healers/2014/10/24/afb632e6-45a0-11e4-b437-1a7368204804_story.html
