Took a little nostalgia trip today to Auburn and Opelika, to root around, revive memories of Auburn in the early 60s, to scout out strange little shops and good restaurants (non-chains), and to meet friends. In Opelika I went into the kitchen at Jimmys (Jim Sikes, a friend of ours) to talk about cooking. Jimmys is a mighty fine restaurant specializing in Cajun and Creole dishes. Give them a try sometime. It is very, very good. Checked out Cafe 123, Niffers, Ma Fias, Eighth and Rail and Irish Bred Pub. Met two lovely ladies for lunch - Nicole DeGotti and Sarah Scott (not my Sarah Scott, but her evil twin. Just kidding). Nicole is a very talented pianist, teaches Yoga and college level music. Sarah is a wonderful artist from New Zealand and an avid runner. She is planning to run a race 36 miles around a mountain and the runners have to be finished before dawn. (Dont know if they get thrown into a volcano or something if they miss the deadline). We grabbed a bite at Pho Le in Auburn and chattered away. Well, actually I chattered mostly, but will bring duct tape for me next time so they will have a chance to talk (sorry for the rapid-fire show & tell ladies). Nicole brought my Winslow Homer coffee table book back from friend Tommy Palmer (Thanks Tommy). Stopped by several quaint shops and amusing little stores and ended up at World Market. I went in to buy some syrup of Orgeat (or zhay - almond flavor, for making Mai Tais). Of course they dont carry it anymore and had no idea what I was talking about. This happens more and more (Id like to buy some whatevers. - Huh, ur, we dont know what you are talking about) So, I spent about $100 bucks on stuff I didnt know I needed. Its a cool store though. A fun day! Adleyn got grand baby-ized at the last minute and couldnt go. Patrick McCurry youre on deck!
