Top Ten Monster Movies I tried to create parameters for the usage of “monster”… so most of these selections are either man-made, freaks of nature, different species or from another world… 1- FRANKENSTEIN (1931, US, James Whale) and THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935, US, James Whale) Karloff was billed as “The Monster”… Universal created a genre that lasts today… both films, while artistically singular, are equally superb 2- KING KONG (1933, US, Merion C. Cooper) The granddaddy of them all… an astonishing combination of atmosphere, effects and storytelling… still scary stuff 3- JAWS (1975, US, Steven Spielberg) Bruce the shark terrifies a New England town and kept millions out of the water in ’75… I was one of them! 4- ALIEN (1979, US, Ridley Scott) and ALIENS (1986, US, James Cameron) Sigourney Weaver takes on what Bette Midler called “a penis on a skateboard” in these two great sci-fi thrillers that introduced an entirely new kind of monster 5- JURASSIC PARK (1993, US, Steven Spielberg) When dinosaurs ruled the earth, indeed… incredible special effects highlight a pretty damn scary tale… 6- THE WOLF MAN (1941, US, George Waggner) More great monsters from the Universal lot… Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night/May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright 7- THEM! (1954, US, Gordon Douglas) Giant ants invade the American Southwest… the best of the ‘50s films warning of the dangers of after-effects of the Atomic bomb 8- DRACULA (1931, US, Tod Browning) Not the first vampire film, but the definitive one… 9- CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (1954, US, Jack Arnold) Sure it’s a man in a big rubber suit but damn it all it still works… besides, it contains one of my all-time favorite lines: “David, you still don’t look like an ichthyologist” 10- DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS (1963, GB, Steve Sekely) A little choppy around the edges, but a great story… killer plants take over the world… RUNNERS-UP: An American Werewolf in London, King Kong (2005), Godzilla (1956), The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, The Thing (1951), Night of the Demon (1957), Gremlins / Gremlins 2, The Blob (1958), Cat People (1942), Tremors
