Totalitarian regimes repress the media, They use deadly force without constraint of courts of law. They imprison their social malcontents. . In the USA, the press ignores 100 thousand protesters in North Carolina. It recently lightly reported violence to break up the Occupy Movement in Oakland and elsewhere. Fox news regularly reports disinformation to play to the prejudices of their audience. Other news agencies do the same to a lessor degree. We imprison more than other nation. Homelessness has been criminalized on an increasing basis. Those that caused many to lose their homes have avoided prosecution. We dont have a government that uses deadly force en mass against its own citizens to suppress discontent. We have an aristocracy that has one set of rules for the wealthy and all others live by social constraints in which even education has become a burden of debt for many.. Income inequality destroys the buying power which a consumer driven society has used to create prosperity for all. Historically, Republics tend to fall internally to military dictatorship. We spend more on the military than we do on anything else. We are not totalitarian as yet. The movement towards it has been rapid since the 1970s.One should recall that Rome was a Republic longer than the USA has been in existence. .
