Totally exhausting day - my puppy Lacy threw up her dinner Weds. - TopicsExpress

Totally exhausting day - my puppy Lacy threw up her dinner Weds. morning. I was concerned but not panicked since I had given her a bowl of Amies food the night before when I forgot her food in the kennel - same brand of food just weight control version. I assumed it was the sudden change of food so I was just keeping an eye on her. Thurs.morning she threw up her dinner again. More concerned. Consulted my daughter who is a vet tech and we decided to withhold food. I took her out to the runs and she gulped a bunch of water and threw that up. At that point I became really concerned. I took her back into the house and kept her in her crate in my bedroom so I could watch her. No more vomiting. Walked her several times and no stool. My daughter and I decided we were going to withhold food, give her rice and broth in the morning - trying to avoid emergency vet bills. At this point we were still thinking it was a stomach upset but while picking up the runs yesterday afternoon I found the Christmas toy the dogs had shredded and realized that it could be an obstruction. This morning while I was dressing she threw up smelly bile and didnt look good. This pup normally does one bounce for every two steps she takes and there was no bounce. I called my vet. They said bring her in. Thats when the roller coaster started. The vet was great. They did blood work and xrays and said maybe an obstruction. They wanted to do more tests and an exploratory surgery. Only problem is the more tests were going to be $750 and the surgery over $1000. I dont have that kind of money. Called my daughter and she says lets see if you can get Credit Care - a program that helps cover vet bills. My credit is in the dumper so I wasnt hopeful. I am calling my son who swore to me he would help me pay if needed for my sweet puppy. My daughter calls back and she got me cleared for a $2500 limit on Credit Care. Call the vet back - this vet doesnt take Credit Care. Back to my daughter. She and my son-in-law (also a vet tech) are on their phones calling in every favor they have with local vets and they find one they know and trust who will do the surgery if necessary on a Friday afternoon at 2 pm We dash back to my vet, grab the puppy, the x-rays and the blood work ($419) and head across town to the other vet. I am totally freaking at this point so afraid I am going to lose my sweet baby. So we get to the new vet and the minute I met her and the surgeon she had on call, I relaxed - two great ladies. They looked at the xray and the puppy. The blood work showed way low electolytes. They suggested that we put her on an iv overnight to get the electrolytes back up and re-evaluate in the morning since it wasnt safe to do the surgery with the electrolytes that low. They werent sure it was an obstruction and thought it might be pancreatitis. Drop my daughter at her house and drive home to collapse. The vets office called about 6:30 pm and said she was responding to the iv and doing well. They will check on her through the night. Still very worried about my sweet baby but feeling a bit better. This pup has been here six weeks and I fell in love with her the minute she walked out of her crate. She has a fabulous personality and we have become buddies. She is such a fun bouncy baby that her lack of bubbles was a dead giveaway that she didnt feel good. I have run the whole gamut of emotions today - panic, tears, relief, nauseated from fear for my baby. Please keep my sweet girl in your prayers. We will know more in the morning.
