This summer, even as Lake Hefner was drawn down to a few weeks of water, OKC officials refused to inform the people dependent on Canton Lake and Lake Hefner of the dire circumstances facing them. Until OKC enacts a serious drought plan based on the level of Canton Lake for those dependent on Canton and Hefner the disaster will continue. Western OK cannot sustain OKC’s growth. Canton Lake has not recovered from the last three draws. If Lake Hefner dependents had reduced their usage 10-20%, Canton Lake would have been at a safe level, and OKC would have been able to save water they were forced to let go by. Now, OKC has no reserve water supply.
