Tottenham’s pursuit of Spanish forward David Villa could reach a conclusion before the end of this week as the London club’s technical director Franco Baldini is expected to hold talks with the player himself. Villa, who is currently away on Confederations Cup duty with Spain, has topped Andre Villas-Boas’ strike targets after the manager has reportedly made up his mind that the Barcelona forward could be the solution to Spurs’ problems in front of goal. Spurs would be relieved to see Villa back to near full fitness following his broken leg, which kept him out of the entire 2011-12 season, but ‘El Guaje’ showed his undoubted class as he found the back of the net 16 times in all competitions last season as the Catalan giants romped to yet another league title. Tottenham’s other strike targets include Valencia striker Roberto Soldado and Internacional forward Leandro Damiao, but the latter’s deal could turn out to be a costly affair, as Spurs would need to stump up a huge fee for his services. AVB has realised that he needs a goal-poacher who will guarantee his club 20+ goals through the course of the season, as the manager’s current strike options Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor flattered to deceive last season, and the London club narrowly missed out on Champions League football. Villa would therefore be a terrific addition to the Spurs squad, as Spain’s leading goalscorer is a proven finisher and could rack up goals for fun.
