Tourism Temples around Tirunelveli Krishnapuram temple The Krishnapuram temple is situated about 13 kms from Tirunelveli city of Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, which is an important tourist destination. This temple is an important part of art and architecture of Tamil Nadu. The Krishnapuram temple is dedicated to Lord Venkatachalapathi. It is filled with sculptural beauties of excellent workmanship. Thiruchendur Murugan Temple It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Muruga and one of the Arupadaiveedu (six major abodes) of Lord Muruga. It is located in the small town of Thiruchendur in the district of Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, India. It is 55 km south-east of Tirunelveli, 40 km from Tuticorin and 75 km north-east of Kanyakumari. It is easily accessible either by bus or car. Frequent train services are available to Tiruchendur from the nearest railway junction, Tirunelveli Junction. Kulesekarapattninam The Mutharamman temple is located 20 Kms from Tiruchendur (Thoothukudi Dist) is known for the popular Dasara festival where folk dance artists from all over the state participate in the festival. Eight beautiful shrines can be seen here. The Milagupillayar shrine is the most famous and unique among them. There is a peculiar phenomenon here. When the water level in the village channel drops, pepper paste is plastered over the idol and the water overflows strangely. Papanasam It is situated 60 kms from Tirunelveli. This is a famous Siva temple, located at the bottom of the Western Ghats and also very near to the origin of river Thamirabarani. The Chitthirai Vishu festival is celebrated every year here in the month of April. Another festival Adi Amavasai is celebrated in July. It is also a good picnic spot. Kadayam Kadaym is located in Ambasamudram Taluka, on the shores of the Jambunathi River and Ramanathi River. These rivers are the tributaries of the Thamirabarani River. It is popular for its lime orchards, thazhambu flowers and a cottage industry of rose water. According to legend, Goddess Kalyani Amman, the presiding deity of this place, pulled out her bracelet, kadagam, and threw it far away in anger. Therefore, this place is called as Kadayam, earlier known as Kadagam. The local people decided to reside at the place where the kadagam fell. Tenkasi Tenkasi means Dakshina Kasi and Varanasi of the south. This temple is dedicated to Viswanatha. The Pandya king Paranthaga Pandiyan after returning from the Benaras constructed this temple. It is situated 53 kms from Tirunelveli and 7 kms from Courtallam. Many beautiful sculptures can be seen in this temple besides a flag staff 400 years old. Thirumalaipuram This place is situated 16 kms from Tenkasi. A rock-cut temple here with Ganesa, Vishnu and dancing Shiva can be seen here. Here, Shiva is seen in a different dance pose i, e, in chatura pose with his right hand thrown in a `Mirgasirsha` attitude. A dwarf near his feet plays the `Chandala Vallaki` instrument. The murals in the ceiling of the temple are badly damaged. Thirumalaiappan Pozhil This is a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Muruga atop of a hill rock. It is 15 kms from Courtallam. Kazhugumalai temple Kazhugumalai temple is situated 76 kms from Tirunelveli and 24 kms from Sankaran Koil in the state of Tamil Nadu. Here, the shrine is created from a huge rock. The unique feature of this temple is that rather than rising from the foundations, it was chiselled from the top. The local people call this temple by the name `Vettuvar Koil`. In the Kazhugumalai temple, Lord Dakshinamurthi is seen in unique pose playing a mirudangam (drum), which cannot be seen anywhere. The `Vishabarana` aspect of Lord Siva holding a Naga is portrayed here. The cobra is shown squirming out of His hold and it looks so lifelike. Jain figures like Tirthankaras, Yakshas and Yakshinis are displayed in a nearby big rock. Sankaran koil temple It is situated 56 kms north of Tirunelveli. This Sankara Narayanan temple is very famous here. This temple is a representation of fusion of two faiths Saivism and Vaishnavism as it contains an image combining both the aspects. All the symbols of Siva, deer, cobra, moon etc can be seen bearing on the right half and the left half has all the symbols of Vishnu like Chakra, conch etc. The `Prakarams` of the temple are adorned with many excellent paintings. During the June-July month, the Goddess Gomathi`s penance called `Adi Thapasu Vizha` and the car festival is celebrated in this temple. Sankarankoil is well connected by road and rail to many important places in the state. Thirukkurungudi It is located in the Western Ghats about 52 kms south of Tirunelveli. It is one of the 108 divine Vishnu shrines. It is also known as Vamana Kshetram. The temple covers an area of over 18 acres. It is dedicated to Azhagiya Nambi and several sculptures can be seen here. The best of them are those of the images of Varuna, Dakshinamurthi, Vamana, and Gajendra Moksha. Uvari It is a village on the shores of the Bay of Bengal on the way to Tiruchendur. It is 72 kms from Tirunelveli. This place is famous for Swayambulingaswamy Siva temple. Every year, three important festivals are held here. Bharatha Uvari is a Roman Catholic Centre where one can see an ancient church as well as a modern church. Valliyur Valliyur is a town in the Tirunelveli District, surrounded by villages, fields and forests. This town is famous for temples such as the Vanamamalai Perumal Temple and Murugan Temple. The Subramanyar Temple is a popular rock-cut sanctum, dedicated to Lord Murugan and his wife Valli. It is believed that this temple was discovered by a Pandya king. Other attractions of this sacred place are the Valliyur Kulam, Kalyana Mandapams and various churches. Nanguneri Nanguneri is a taluk headquarters and is popular for the Totadrinathar Temple, also known as the Totadri Mutt. It is managed by the Vanamamalai Mutt and Thothathri Nathan is the presiding deity of this temple. An oil well, called the Ennai Kinaru, is located within the premises of this temple. This place is enclosed by dense forests, hamlets and the Western Ghats. This region is counted among the divya sheathram. The major attractions are the festivals of Panguni and Chaitra, celebrated from March through April and April through May. Kanyakumari Temple A Shakti Peetha (place of worship where the pieces of Goddess Durgas body fell during the Tandav), this temple is dedicated to Parvati, a virgin incarnation of Goddess Durga who wanted to marry Lord Shiva. Devi Kanya Kumari or Kumari Amman is the principal temple deity. According to legends, Shiva did not turn up on the wedding day as promised and the feast remained incomplete with grains turning to stones. The temple has the black stone image of the virgin deity with a diamond nose ring glittering in the dark chambers. Suchindram 13-km from Kanyakumari, Suchindram is a small village that you must definitely go to understand the rich cultural heritage of India. The major spotlight of the place is the famous Sthanumalayan Temple, which is notably marked for its artistic treasures. The main deity in the form of a shivlinga is in three parts; the top represents Lord Shiva, the middle Lord Vishnu, and the base Lord Brahma. Sthanu is a name of Shiva, Mal of Vishnu, and Ayan of Brahma; thus the name Sthanumalaya. This temple is greatly known for its unique musical columns and it has a 6 meter tall statue of Lord Hanuman. It is one of the best places to go in order to understand the rich religious and cultural heritage of India.. Swamithoppe Swamithoppe is a town that is situated in Kanyakumari. It is a small village that attracts many visitors every year. Its main strength and popularity arises from the fact that this small village was the place where the Ayyavazhi religion was founded in the 19th century. In fact many followers of this religion today still pilgrimage over there in order to fulfill their religious requirements. You can see the temple where Ayya Valkundar lived and you can visit the historical well of Muttirikkinaru in which all castes were allowed to use water in the 19th century. It also includes the Swamithope Pathi (headquarters of Ayyavazhi), a famous temple in Tamilnadu, situated 10 km to the northwest. This dargha not only attracts the Muslims it attracts the other religions in equal numbers. This dargha is built as a Hindu Temple pattern. In the holy land if their prayers are answered they vow to offer to the dargha in numbers during Kanthuri festival with great deep respect. In this dargha lebbais reacts like priests similar as Hindus and all other formalities are also same as them. Holy ashes are got from tamarind bark, ghee and flowers called nerchai are given to the people as devotee. Ph: 04634-240566. Athankarai Pallivasal From Tirunelveli 46km. There are two Domes, one for Syed Ali Fatima and other for Sheik mohammed. These two are consider as holy sufi saints. It is like a common place because all religious people visit and get their vow granted. Tourism Churches around Tirunelveli Manapad It is located 18 Kms. from Tiruchendur. It is on the sea-shore at the Bay of Bengal. An ancient Roman Catholic Church is here where the Cross is said to have been brought from Jerusalem, This Church is also associated with St. Xavier, the famous missionary from West. Since there are other small Churches here in this place, it is called as Chinna Jerusalem (Small Jerusalem). Kappal Matha Church, Uvari A small church for St. Mary which was under the control of pastors of Goa mission existed here. In course of time, in 1903, this church was converted into a school. On important occasions as per the wishes of the people, festivals were conducted and prayers were offered to her. There was a custom among the young maidens to go to the nunnery in the night and sleep there. On one such occasion they saw a bright light surrounding this Selvamatha statue even though nobody lit a candle. Many people of Uvari witnessed this light which was there for over an hour. St. Xavier Church About 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) from Kanyakumari in Kottar, the stark white spires of St. Xavier Church stand sentinel over this little coastal town. It was built around 1600 by St. Francis Xavier during one of his trips to Kanyakumari district from Goa. During his stay in Kottar, Saint Xavier used to worship Mother Mary in a small temple. He even averted the invasion of the Padagas on the people of Venad which was appreciated greatly by the ruling king. And as a token of appreciation, the king allotted him a piece of land in Kottar to get a Catholic church constructed. The site already had a church in 1544 where the St. Xavier Church now stands. Trinity Cathedral From Tirunelveli just 2Km. The allocated place is named as Murugankurichi. The Holy Trinity Cathedral a small, elegant and beautiful Church was built in 1826 by Rev Rhenius and opened to public for worship on 26 June 1826. It took only 175 days for its construction which cost about Rs.2000/- This small church with an oblong edifice measuring 64 ft. by 30 ft still serves as a nucleus for this massive Cathedral which developed in later years. Our Lady of Snows Basilica, Beach Road, Tutocorin Town Tuticorin is famous for Our Lady of Snows Shrine Basilica festival which takes place during August every year. To show their love and gratitude, devotees presented a golden car which is used to carry the miraculous statue of Our Lady of Snows around the town during her feast day. The Golden Car first appeared in procession on 2nd February 1806 and since then on 5th August of every year. A big star rests over the royal crown on the top of the car, signifying the name of Our Lady as the Star of the Sea (Stella Maris). The statue is one of three works of religious art originally brought by explorer Ferdinand Magellan to the Philippines, the others being the Santo Niño de Cebu and the Manapad altar crucifix.
