Tracey Handsaker dropped in this AM asking for ideas about the closure of Tonmawr, Pont and Bryn schools, with the Pont and Bryn pupils guaranteed a place at Cwmafan. Interesting looking at the numbers etc, but what has this to do with Cwmafan and our school - well our school has a capacity of 420 children, currently the combined schools have 385 pupils - the Infants 6 or so over capacity and the Juniors about 60 under capacity. Currently Pont have 83 pupils and Bryn have 59 pupils, if as of January all these pupils are moved into Cwmafan school we will be running at 107 pupils over capacity, or at 125% of capacity. All the staff and pupils will suffer because of this, unless the council intend to drop Portakabins into the yard as classrooms, our canteen has space for about 90 pupils, approximately 25 of these new pupils will receive free school meals, add in the approx 100 pupils already in the school who are also eligible for free school meals and the staff will be managing 3 sittings per lunch time etc etc. Seems to me that the council have not thought this through and what can seem like an issue for communities up the hill from us is actually our problem too?
