Track or Treat! We hope everyone has a safe and fun halloween. But in the spirit of fleet safety, we thought youd enjoy some insightful statistics to remind your drivers about this tonight (And a few tips to help you monitor them). Halloween lead other days of the year in the number of pedestrian vehicle accidents. October 31, 2013 registers the highest number of pedestrian fatalities than any other day of the year, according to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). On any given day, approximately 2.6 pedestrian fatalities transpire. In contrast, Halloween documents five to six pedestrian fatalities each year, almost double the daily average. Riskiest roadways: Drivers should be careful at crosswalks, intersections, and the middle of the block. State Farm reports that 80 out of 115 accidents transpire in the middle of residential streets. (Use GRGs myGeotab routing tools to rout drivers away from risky areas) Hazardous hours: Almost two-thirds of pedestrian accidents on Halloween happen between 5 and 9 pm. Most accident prone: Drivers under the age of 25 pose the greatest danger to young pedestrians on Halloween, accounting for 33 percent of fatal accidents, where children were involved. Turn on headlights: At dusk and around 5 pm, turn on lights to improve road visibility. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Reports that three out four pedestrian accidents transpire in urban areas with most happening at nighttime and at a non-intersection. Slowdown: The NHTSA shows that low impact collisions are generally less fatal than high speed accidents. Reduce speed to allow for plenty braking time and space. (Monitor driver speed vs posted road speed, and make sure drivers are not speeding through residential zones.) Back up with care: Use vehicle video monitors when parking or backing into a space. (Turn on the backing up when leaving rule in myGeotab to make monitor backing up.) Drive attentively: As Halloween is a night of the unexpected. Drive vigilantly, keeping eyeballs glued to the road. (Watch for harsh turning and cornering) Happy Halloween! Austin Rehorn GRG GPS Fleet Solutions
