Traffic Delays Expected The Washington County Fair begins on Monday, September 09th and concludes on Saturday, September 14th. The fair has a wide variety of entertainment and activities for people of all ages. The nightly concerts bring a large number of visitors to the Washington County Fairgrounds. The Abingdon Police Department is not charged with parking cars in the fairgrounds. This task is accomplished by a private contractor. The police department provides a transition between West Main Street (Rte. 11) and the fair entrance. If you are entering the fairgrounds between 5:30 P.M. and 7:00 P.M., there will be delays. Visitors should be prepared to wait in traffic to park. The police department will provide traffic assistance by creating a dedicated turn lane on West Main Street for fair traffic. The lane will be marked by orange cones. Visitors arriving via Interstate 81 are encouraged to use EXIT 13 to avoid congestion and delays at exit 14. Please DO NOT call 9-1-1 or contact the Washington County Dispatch Center to report traffic congestion. This overwhelms the dispatchers who are attempting to mitigate ACTUAL emergencies. The officers directing traffic know that there will be traffic congestion, but they can only move traffic from Main Street as quickly as the contractor parks the cars in the fairgrounds.
