Training Session For Measuring Snow The Emergency Coordinator - TopicsExpress

Training Session For Measuring Snow The Emergency Coordinator for Steinbach and Hanover is hoping this region will soon be able to provide more accurate precipitation data. And Denis Vassart says a training session Wednesday should help. Vassart explains there is a group called CoCoRaHS, which stands for Community Collaborative Rain Hail and Snow Network. A representative will be in Steinbach running a training session for people that have a rain gauge and like to observe weather. Vassart points out this is not a forecasting course. While measuring rain is fairly self explanatory, Vassart says measuring snowfall is different. He says Environment Canada uses a snow gauge to measure moisture content; that sort of gauge can be found at their Kleefeld Weather Station. But Vassart says he uses a snow board at an appropriate place on his yard. It must be located where there isnt too much drifting but in an area thats not covered by trees. Then, after a snowfall you simply measure the depth. Vassart says the data can then be uploaded to the CoCoRaHS website. He notes the more people that input precipitation amounts, the more accurate the information online. And he says this just enhances the Storm Ready program in the area. Its another stage in our being prepared and having some records of whats happened in the area around us and in town, he says. We have a couple of people in our area now that are members of CoCoRaHS and have been tracking how much rainfall. Vassart asks anyone interested in taking part in Wednesdays course to contact him at [email protected] by Monday. The training will happen at the Fire Hall.
