Training tip!! A big part of understanding your dog is understanding his senses and accepting that they are indeed different from humans. Both humans and dogs have the same three senses: sight, hearing and smelling; however, while most humans communicate by hearing, seeing, and then smelling, dogs primarily communicate by smelling, seeing, and lastly hearing. Dogs also have a universal sense which humans do not have, where they can feel the energy (emotions) of the other beings around them. As a general rule, pet dogs dont use their noses enough. Long story short, this leads to imbalanced behaviors. Encourage your dog to use his nose more by tossing food in the grass for him to find and by hiding food in the house and teaching him a Go find it game. When I first adopted Duke, he was extremely visual and rarely used his nose. He barked as soon as he saw people and lost his mind when he saw other dogs. *One* of the rehabilitation techniques I used for Duke was encouraging him to use his nose. This helped him rely on his nose more which in turn changed his behavior: he sniffed people instead of lunging at them. So simple & yet so effective. Here are Zoey, Havok and #Tillyboardandtrain hunting for food in the yard. I did a lot of this with Havok as a puppy to build his sniffing abilities (lol!) and increase his hunt drive. Sniffing is actually quite tiring for dogs so he needed to build his endurance. :)
