Training tips- If your dog is too aroused do not take them out as they will only become further aroused and unable to understand what you ask of them. This is the most common mistake owners make when teaching their dogs what they want. Many owners love the over excitted behaviours which dogs give before the walk but do not realise these should be undesired behaviours. Arousal only becomes worse as the dog gets older. The only way to stop it from happening is to re train your dog to behave in a way that is appropriate when leaving the house. This can take some time depending on your skill and experience as an owner. If your dog is calm when leaving the house they stand a better chance at training outside and will focuss better on you rather then things that stimulate an undsired response. When you reward your dog for good behaviour your dog should first be taught to ignore the food this means they must not be thinking about it or else they will associate your hand with reward and not understand why they getting rewarded. If you suspect your dog is thinking about getting a treat or going for a walk wait a while until you completely sure. Training sessions for puppies should be ten -15 minutes max any sign of arousal or loss of interest and the games end. Cats can be taught as well as dogs.
