It is a glimpse of a forgotten age, before bank statements were read online and when trains were powered by steam. But a new scheme could help revive the seemingly antiquated relationship between railway stations and the postal service. The link between Britain’s mail and rail used to be close. At its strongest in the early 1980s around 200,000 mailbags were carried each day by British Rail, the nationalised operator, says Julian Stray, a curator at the British Postal Museum and Archive.
