Transcendence 2014 by Fairul Zahid, Naim Syahrazad Zin with guest artist JS Wong . Videographer and editor by Seha Mso Contemporary dance has the ability to excite the audience with its dynamics, physicality and perhaps more interestingly, to raise questions and stimulate discussion. Beginning with the pioneers of modern dance such as Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis, this genre evolved further since 1950s after the advent of post-modernism in New York and in Germany. Meanwhile, in the east, post-WW II brought the advent of butoh which has become Japan’s greatest contribution to contemporary dance. This development/revolution can be attributed in part to the breaking of boundaries between performers and audience, the importance for dance to be relevant to present society, as well as the desire to create new vocabulary. Transcendence is a full-length contemporary dance show that explores basic concepts in contemporary dance that is space and time. Creating movement through various possibilities and what meanings can be derived from it that would be individual and universal. Transcendence hopes to bring audiences on this journey of exploration and see what it triggers in their own minds and lives. Transcendence gathers three of the finest dance talents in the country – award-winners and having acquired vast international exposure and experience through performances, choreolabs and other exchange models. Choreographed primarily by Fairul, it is a collaboration of ideas by these three talents - Naim Syahrazad, who won the prize as “Shooting Star” of Tanz Magazine 2013, as the brightest new star for his work in the Riki Von Falken collaboration Echo, that has toured Malaysia, Germany and Brazil, while JS Wong is the Artistic Director of Damansara Performing Arts Centre, and a former dancer with the acclaimed Cloud Gate Dance Theatre in Taiwan. Transcendence is the farewell performance (for a few years)of Fairul Zahid as he prepares to leave Malaysia to pursue his postgraduate Master of Fine Arts in Dance Performance and Choreography studies at the acclaimed Tisch School of the Arts, New York University in USA at the end of August, becoming the first Malaysian dancer to do so. It is his desire to produce a work that he can be proud off for all his supporters, as well as serve as a personal and professional benchmark for when he returns.
