Transcontinental article 8th Oct 2014 - question to mayoral candidates: Question: What do you think is needed to help revitalize Commercial Road? Answer: Main streets all over the world are in a similar situation to Commercial Road. We have changed the way we shop. Ours is worse because we have a derelict town hall in the middle of it. It is time for council to look at a business case to make this happen, maybe a partnership with state and federal government for office space, a play cafe, library/coffee shop etc. There are rumours of two department stores coming to town. While this would be good to see, it will do little for the vibrancy and speciality shops in Commercial Road. What can council do? 1. Develop town hall site keeping the historic facade and linking it to Gladstone Square. 2. Improve parking. 3. Encourage other uses of the space in Commercial Road i.e. training facilities, non-government organisations, office space etc. 4. Through Regional Development Australia-Far North, encourage and train retailers in internet sales. 5. Run events using Commercial Road i.e. concerts, markets, outdoor films, street theatre, special nights trading with activities et. Lets create good infrastructure, activities, enterprise and vibrancy in our CBD. It simply comes down to being innovative and thinking outside the box.
