Travel adventures of a FabAcademic Day 2 in Vancouver I left - TopicsExpress

Travel adventures of a FabAcademic Day 2 in Vancouver I left the hotel in a huff after having words with the manager on the phone after she told me that Nedbank cannot cancel the transaction because mine is an SAA Voyager card. But how could this be because the card is issues by Nedbank? Look you have created the problem by deducting the money from my card and so you must sort out the problem I said. A few minutes later they saw me leaving the hotel without saying anything to them. This was after writing about this on FB and twitter. By the time I got into the bus I could see the Sheraton head office response that the hotel is working on resolving the problem. I went to the meeting at the university and as we were taking I. the meeting I saw a response from my hotel apologizing. It is amazing how quick a response comes when one vents on social media! The meeting went well. Richard Barwell (Canada), Mercy Kazima (Malawi), Paola Valero (Denmark), Judit Moschkovich (USA), Anjum Halai (Pakistan) and I were meeting to finalize our work on the ICMI study 21 volume. It was my lucky day because when I arrived at the university I did not know where the building was and after asking two people I walked into the first building and there I met Richard looking for food to buy. Warm right hugs! I last saw him in September last year when we were both invited to speak in Peru. He is a good friend and we work together very well, so there was happiness all around. I did not have to search for the room anymore. We got the food and went to the apartment him and his student rented for the duration of the conference. Richards birthday always happens during PME and so I as usual I had a gift for him. Of course I could not remember whether it was yesterday or tomorrow and when I asked him he said, neither which meant the answer was today. More hugs and so the gift was perfectly on time! Thereafter we went back to the university to meet with the rest of the team. The team had dinner together at the Banana Leaf which is a Malaysian restaurant. I was feeling full despite the fact that I had only had breakfast. It was the lays chips and water that filled my stomach. So I had a small prawn dish. We organised a dessert dish in the restaurant with a candle for Richards birthday and so we sang for him. He went red and I proceeded to take selfies. See pictures 😄. At the end of it all I walked with Richard while the rest went to drive with Judit and her partner in their hired car. I took bus 22 back to my hotel at Wall Centre in broad day light at 21:00. On arriving in my room I found a tray on the table with a note from the hotel guest services. I knew it was an apology. I opened the dish on the tray and it was fruits. See pictures below. So I thought why did they not just apologise in the morning? Why do they only respond in such a generous manner simply because I complained on twitter? Is this how these businesses want to be treated? An hour later another SMS came through my phone indicating that the hotel has deducted a further 235CAD from the card. That is when I noticed that even though their note says the earlier deduction of 900CAD has been sorted, I have not yet received a notification from the bank. So tomorrow morning I will be on them again so that they can explain. The good thing is that I will not be going for breakfast anymore because my room is equipped with a fridge and I have stocked it with all sorts of things for breakfast. Go tsamaya ke go bona!
