Travel scholarship . . If I had lots of money, one of the things that I would do is to establish a travel scholarship for Malaysian youth. A (competitive) scholarship that would pay for youth to travel and stay in another country for 3 - 6 months. The applicant would have to explain why they chose the particular country and what they intend to achieve over 3 - 6 months. The scholarship does not have to luxurious - just enough to cover the basic costs. I would give preference to countries that Malaysians rarely go (e.g. Kyrgyzstan, Trinidad & Tobago, Mozambique, Malta, Kelantan, Bangladesh, Tunisia, Luxemborg, etc) . . Travel broadens the mind. I find too many of our youth, including those who have graduated from our local universities, think Malaysia is in the centre of the universe. Many have no clue how people in other countries live and work. Many have no clue about world history or geopolitics. Many have no friends or acquaintance in other countries. Our school syllabus also does not help. . . It would be good for our country if our people have a global view of things. Understand how we fit in viz the rest of the global economy. Appreciate the differences and similarities between us and our neighbours. Learn how everything is interlinked on this planet. Learn that custom, cultures and habits vary across the planet and that the way we Malaysians do things is not the only way of doing things. . . The travel scholarship, of course, cannot change the situation overnight. But it will give a number of youth very valuable exposure and hopefully they become better Malaysians and better citizens of the world. [and hopefully they do not just parrot what their teachers or parents or friends say or do]. . . The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page (I dont know who said this). Jauh perjalanan luas pemandangan. . . Perhaps the government can consider this.
