Travelling back home after spending a couple of days with Sanjeevani Palliative Home Care team. Enthusiastic volunteers, committed doctors and nurses offering services to people living in extremely poor social conditions in rural Bengal. This is a different cup of tea altogether. The whole neighbourhood turning up when the home care team arrives; People rushing to neighbours houses to borrow a few plastic chairs, clinical examinations outside the home and discussions on management in the street because they are impossible in the ill lit 200-250 square feet space where the patient and family live, potentially curable conditions getting to incurable state because the family does not have money to get treatment from the hospital in the city. Quite a learning experience. Extremely humbling also. I have started to realise why people say that Kerala is different!
