Treating Dry Eyes with Nutrition In nutritional medicine weve known for years that many people are helped from an opthalmic solution of dilute flax seed oil! New research shows that a combination of the EPA and DHA that most humans make from the alpha-linolenic acid in flax seed oil, in combination with GLA, which is made from the omega 6 essential fatty acid (linoleic acid) also in flax seed oil, can effectively treat many people with the dry eye syndrome. This was published in the July Issue of the journal, Cornea. Dry eyes occur when there is not enough or else poor quality tears. There are three layers of tears, mucus on the surface of the eye to smooth out the surface, water and electrolyes on top of the mucus, and an oil made by the glands in the eyelids, called Meibomian glands, which slows evaporation of the water in tears. Defects in any of these layers can lead to dry eyes. What is not mentioned in the article is that EPA and DHA are what waterproof the surfaces of the body. When were short in essential fatty acids it can add to the development of dry eyes. The many causes of dry eyes and its treatment are reviewed in this video.
