Tremendous turnout for the memorial and visitation for Gary L. Hughes, 64, of Ravenswood, W.Va., who went home to be with the Lord Jesus on Sept. 26, 2014, following a brave battle with an extended illness. He was surrounded by his wife of 45 years, Sharon (Flinn) Hughes, and his loving family. Gary was born in Ravenswood on July 18, 1950, a son of the late Blaine Young and Hazel Elva (Casto) Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother. Gary was a school bus operator for Jackson County Schools with 41 years of service, and a funeral attendant with Casto Funeral Home for 22 years. He will be remembered as one of the most popular bus drivers for Ravenswood High School extra-curricular events. He impacted others more by his example of hard work, honesty and loyalty than by his words. He lived and worked on his family farm his entire life with most of those years spent operating Riverview Dairy. He was a lay minister in several churches, most recently Ravenswood Church of God. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Sharon Darlene (Flinn) Hughes; three children (the pride of his life), Jason E. Hughes (Carrie), Jared B. Hughes (Lora) and Amanda Hughes Rawson (Kevin); 11 grandchildren, Lakyn Hughes Bourgeois (Caleb), Logan Hughes Harless (Steven), Savannah Hughes, Michaela Hughes, Lane Hughes, Travis Rawson, Ross Hughes, Ethan Rawson, Hayden Hughes, Cameron Rawson and Grayson Hughes; two great-grandsons, Carson Bourgeois and Landon Harless; and one sister, Gloria Hughes of Ravenswood. Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Casto Funeral Home Chapel, Ravenswood, with Pastor Mac Riggins of Ravenswood Church of God officiating. Burial will follow in Ravenswood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. today at the funeral home, Donations can be made in Garys honor to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital at P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929. The Hughes family extends their deepest appreciation to all those who prayed for Gary and a special thanks to The James Cancer Center in Columbus, Ohio, for its exceptional care, Fresenius Dialysis Center staff of Ripley, and CAMC-Memorial Division.
