Tribune Cooking gas price crashes by 27% · Written by Tunde Dodondawa - Lagos · Tuesday, 23 July 2013 01:53 The price of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) otherwise known as cooking gas has crashed from N4,800 it was last week to N3,500 on Monday for the 12.5kg cylinder, following the removal of the blockage of Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) vessels by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). When the Nigerian Tribune visited some dealers in Lagos on Monday, it was learnt that a 12.5kg cylinder of LPG was selling at an average price N3,500. An LPG dealer, Mr Sesan Falodun, confirmed that although supplies have improved when compared to last week, nevertheless, the price was yet to return to normal. He said, “Prior to the NLNG-NIMASA crises, a 12.5kg cylinder was selling for N2,600 to N3000, but during the crises, it went as high as N4,800. Now that vessels are offloading, and supply is improving by the day, we hope the price will return to normal soon.” In a telephone interview with the immediate past President, Nigerian Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association (NLPGA), Auwallu Illu, he confirmed that some vessels that they were not able to offload at the weekend but they had started discharging products on Monday. “MT Providence which loaded cooking gas has discharged, but I cannot confirm the actual volume,” he said. It was also gathered that the price of kerosene has increased from N110 per litre to N150 per litre at filling stations across Lagos due to increase in demand for kerosene. It was observed that most LPG consumers had switched to alternatives such as kerosene, firewood and coal. A marketer who pleaded anonymity confirmed to Nigerian Tribune on Monday that demand for kerosene has risen sharply because more people were moving to buy the product. “The price of kerosene has risen seriously. Many people bought kerosene at N150 per litre on Sunday. The reason was because many have started using kerosene instead of cooking gas, “ he said.
