Trick-or-treating was one of the most fun things I ever did when we lived in suburban Chicago, so many years ago. One Halloween my mom dressed me up like a girl, and people said things like hes such a pretty girl! which mortified me terribly. But after that, when my brother and I were allowed to go by ourselves, it was with such a wonderful sense of freedom and adventure. It wasnt about the candy, it was that feeling of running through the October streets as night fell, everything smoky-smelling and the sky orange and ash grey at twilight. Times like that, there was nothing better than being a boy.
