Trigger Warning - Im going to say something that I think is very important - With Jian Ghomeshi arrested, hes back in the news. And on almost every link Ive seen, theres been a joke about what will happen to him in prison. The idea is that its hilarious that hell get what he gave - only its NOT hilarious. Its hurtful. Its a rape joke. A revenge rape joke is still a rape joke. A prison rape joke is still a rape joke. People who suffer abuse are three times as likely to become abusers, according to the British Journal of Psychiatry. Theres a chance that the person your wishing harm on has already experienced it. Add to that the idea that rape as a punitive measure, as a sort of justice, is a broken and damaging idea and youll see why I find this sort of off-hand comment so frustrating. We cannot treat the rapes of prisoners or men or even criminals as something less than a horrible crime. Its horrible when a criminal attacks a victim, no matter who the victim is or how we may justify it. So wish him a lengthly sentence, wish justice for the victims, wish them solace and wholeness, but do not wish him an act so hateful that it has no place in fair and good discourse.
