Sugar to Energy Festival 2014 The Ministry of Tourism will pump $.7m into this year’s Sugar to Energy Festival which runs on June 6-8th. Tourism Minister, Gerard Hadeed told the Trinidad Guardian this will be one of the “happy events” on the nation’s calendar that he wants to see promoted with more national involvement. Couva, which is known as the oldest sugar village in Trinidad, generated much of its prominence from its production of this major crop. To commemorate its historical involvement in the sugar industry, the Sugar & Energy Festival was founded by the Couva/Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce (CPLCC) in the year 1997. The chamber changed the name from the “Sugar & Energy Festival” to the “Sugar to Energy Festival” to recognise the history sugar played in the nation’s development. Lily Herrai, president of the CPLCC said the goals and objectives are to promote and sustain culture, to promote opportunities for the business development , to educate, stimulate and entertain the younger generation and the wider community.
