Trinidad and Tobago students top in Caribbean Saturday, November 23 2013 TRINIDAD and Tobago students have once again topped the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) winning eight out of nine regional CAPE awards from the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC). This was announced yesterday by Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh in a statement to the House of Representatives at Tower D, International Waterfront Centre, Port-of-Spain. The eight CAPE students that captured awards for outstanding performance are: - Shelemiah Peterkin of St Joseph’s Convent, St Joseph, Most Outstanding in Business Studies award - Stephen Prince of Hillview College, Information and Communication Technology award - Ronan Narine of North Eastern College, Environmental Science award - Maryam Archie of St Joseph’s Convent, San Fernando, Mathematics award - Elise Francis also of St Joseph’s Convent, San Fernando, Technical Studies award - Brendan Hatch of Fatima College, Modern Languages award - Zakiyah Ali of St Joseph’s Convent, Port of Spain, also for Modern Languages - Jean-Luc Duval of St Mary’s College, Natural Science award Two students also received top regional awards at the level of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate: Nathaniel Adiah of Presentation College, Chaguanas and Aimee De Montbrun of Holy Name Convent, Port-of-Spain are the winners of Best Short Story and Best two dimensional work respectively. CXC will present the awards at a ceremony on December 5 at the National Cultural Centre in Georgetown, Guyana. Gopeesingh said, “I take this opportunity to congratulate all of our students who have demonstrated excellence in both the CAPE and the CSEC in 2013 and to encourage those who will be writing in the future to continue to strive for such excellence.” He noted local students have won these prestigious CAPE awards in the past: in 2010 they won five of the top nine awards including the Dennis Irvine Award, “the symbol of academic excellence in the region” won by a Presentation College, San Fernando student; in 2011 and 2012 eight of the nine awards inclusive the Dennis Irvine Award, won by students of Presentation College, San Fernando and St Joseph’s Convent, St Joseph respectively. This year the Dennis Irvine Award was won by Jamaican student Dea Thomas. Gopeesingh said that local students have “consistently demonstrated excellent performance” in CAPE and the overall grades have continued to improve over the year. He also noted that the number of scholarships awarded for CAPE has increased steadily over the years and from 2010 to 2013 a total of 1483 have been awarded or one in every eight students.
