Trinitys chapter of the Daughters of the King has compiled a booklet of Lenten devotionals based on the Lectionary and Daily Office readings for Lent. Watch this space daily for the days reflection! Here are the reflections for Ash Wednesday (March 5th) and Thursday in the Week of Last Epiphany (March 6th). Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2014 ...and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Matthew 6:4) I don’t know about you, but I like getting kudos for a job well done. There’s been more than a few times I’ve gone fishing for compliments. I’ll even admit I’m aware I am doing it sometimes. These are the moments I am not strong in who I am, scared I’m not good enough, afraid I will be rejected, feeling alone. Jesus didn’t. He knew EXACTLY who he was – the Son of God. The Son of God. He knew who he was and didn’t seek affirmation from anyone but His Father. His Father knew he was performing miracles and transforming the lives of His human brothers and sisters. He never needed those same brothers’ and sisters’ compliments; he knew His Father knew. As we begin the Lenten journey, let us do so quietly, personally, without fanfare. Let us go forward relying on the fact that our Father knows. Let us journey forward like Jesus. Thursday in the Week of Last Epiphany, March 6, 2014 Psalm 37: 1-18 When I turned to read the psalm appointed for today, there was a simple date I’d written years ago, “9/11/01”. I’ll admit that for a split second I had to think why that particular date was significant, then it hit me like a wall much like the terrifying and confusing events of that gut wrenching day in 2001. I remember trying to claw my way to understanding, to make sure what I was seeing and hearing on the news was really happening and not some scene from a just released apocalyptic movie. We were all glued to the t.v. worrying, asking more questions than anyone had answers, wanting to be brave. The psalm that day was the same as today. Listen to the commands: Do not fret; Trust in the Lord and do good; Delight yourself in the Lord; Commit your way to the Lord: Be still and wait patiently; Refrain from anger. The OT prophet, Habakkuk, also knew this lesson. May we, like him, be able to pray in the face of uncertain circumstances and danger, “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior”, for therein lies the true source of our strength and peace.
