Triptych of the Jerusalem Mother of God with Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Icons of the Blessed Mother of God have always been especially loved by the Russian people. This exquisite triptych portrays the Mother of God, Who wears a deep blue cloak with embroidered sleeves. In Her lap sits Christ as a Child, Who holds a celestial orb, signifying His dominion over the world and of the air around it. He solemnly blesses the onlooker with His right hand. She holds in Her hand an Easter llily, a signifier of the future for Her Child. The Archangels Gabriel and Michael are depicted bowing reverently, each holds an orb with the initals IC and XC, for Jesus Christ. A small icon of the Holy Face of Christ (Acheiropoietos) is situated at the top of the central icon. Papier-mache, egg tempera, metallic paints, clear lacquer. The execution in egg tempera of this stunning triptych is extraordinary. The icon is entirely hand painted, including the scroll work on the front doors, which have small metal grips attached to them.
