This was a really sad situation. I represented this guy on his criminal case. When I was working with him he could not even speak intelligibly or sit up in his wheelchair. His condition was so bad that the sheriff refused to transport him to his court dates. The sheriffs department made the prosecutor, judge, court staff, and myself come to the hospital to take the plea in his hospital room. There is at least one mistake in the Press Enterprise Article - he was not sentenced to prison. After he was sentenced, he was moved from the jail area of the hospital to a virtually identically room in the civilian side of the hospital. It is interesting the difference in the way the two news articles portray this situation. The Press Enterprise article seems meant to inspire hateful outrage, and the comments reflect that it succeeded. The LA Times article takes a totally different approach: latimes/local/lanow/la-me-la-to-jury-riverside-police-shooting-20140611-story.html blog.pe/breaking-news/2014/06/11/riverside-county-man-shot-by-deputy-awarded-7-8-million/
