Troop L - NEWS RELEASE May 16, 2014 Single Vehicle Fiery Crash Kills Motorist in Tangipahoa Parish Tangipahoa - Earlier today at approximately 1:20 PM, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash on La. 40 at mile marker 23.5 near Global Wildlife in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of Cory Casto (W/M 34) of Baton Rouge. Preliminary investigation revealed that Casto was operating a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban eastbound on La. 40. Casto, for reasons under investigation, veered left, crossed the center line, traveled off of the roadway, and struck a tree. The Suburban ignited upon impact and soon became fully engulfed in flames. Mr. Casto received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Due to the fire, it is unknown if Casto was restrained or if impairment was a factor. A blood sample was collected from him so a toxicological analysis can be performed at the LSP Crime Lab. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, to always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective way to protect yourself in a crash.
