Tropical Storm Ana continues to aim toward the northwest Hawaiian Islands this morning. A Tropical Storm Warning continues for portions of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Nihoa to French Frigate Shoals. A Hurricane Watch continues for portions of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Nihoa to Maro Reef. Ana is centered as of 5 a.m. HST / 11 a.m. EDT about 270 miles west-southwest of Lihue and about 300 miles southeast of French Frigate Shoals, moving toward the west. A gradual turn to the northwest later today and Tuesday is expected. Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph. Little change in intensity is forecast for today, but some intensification is expected on Tuesday. Tropical storm conditions should occur over Necker island, French Frigate Shoals, and Tern island late tonight or Tuesday. Hurricane conditions are possible over French Frigate Shoals,Tern island, and nearby waters on Tuesday afternoon or Tuesday night. Large swells will build across the northwest Hawaiian islands through Tuesday. Surf produced by these swells will be dangerous along the southern and southeastern facing reefs of the northwest Hawaiian islands. Rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches, with local amounts of 12 inches, are possible over the northwest Hawaiian islands near the center of Ana.
