True Success Story about Surah Al-‘Asr One of the most precious gifts from Allah is time. Allah wants us to use our time wisely and carefully. We will have to give an account to Allah of how did we use our time in this world. If we use time in doing good, it will benefit us and our families and people around us. However, if we waste time, we lose our energies, our families lose, and people around us also lose. Lost time cannot be found again. This Surah teaches us the value of time and how we benefit from it, instead of losing it. A great scholar, Imam Safi’I, once said: “This Surah alone is enough for humans to ensure their happiness.” If we read this Surah, understand it and follow its teachings it will make our life happy in this world and in the ‘Akhirah. Another Islamic scholar, Imam Razi, wrote about an interesting incident of his life. This incident made him understand the true message of this Surah al-‘Asr. Once Imam Razi was in the city of Damascus. It was a hot day. An ice-seller wanted to sell his ice, but he could not find any buyer. The ice was melting fast in the heat. The poor man realized that soon all the ice would melt. He saw how his effort would be wasted and his wealth lost. In those days there were no factories to make ice and no freezers to save it. People would go to the mountains with their donkeys, collect ice and bring it to the city to sell. The ice was kept wrapped up in burlap cloth and wooden chests to save it from melting. In desperation, the ice seller was calling people to help him and buy his ice: “O people have pity on the person whose wealth is melting before his eyes!” Imam Razi understood the meaning of the Surah when he heard this man and remembered it always. He wisely thought our lives are like ice, slowly melting away. The Surah teaches us how to make our lives successful. Let us read the Surah and try to understand the meaning of the two stories: 1. Why Imam Shafi’i said, “This Surah alone is sufficient for human beings for their success?” and 2. What the story of the ice-seller tells us about the message of this Surah?
