True story of Indian army man. Jaswantsingh Rawat Soldiers iron his clothes and polish his shoes every night and keep them in a room where he used to live. Next morning it seems that someone had weared clothes and shoes will be dirty. Not only this, according to some soldiers when they got a nape while on duty, someone slap them and ask them to be awake as the safety of Indian border is in your hands. These are some of the many fairy tales about an Indian army Maha Vir Chakra awarded (posthumous) soldier Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat. There is a memorial cum Temple of Jaswant Singh popularly known as “Jaswant Baba” an hour after Sela Pass in Arunachal Pradesh. On the way from Guhati to Tawang about 12,000 feet above the sea level there is a Jaswant War Memorial. This memorial built in honour of Jaswant Singh’s ultimate valor and sacrifice during 1962 India China War. Jaswant Singh was serving with the 4th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles. During the final phase of India China War his company was asked to fall back but he remained at his post. He single handedly fought Chinese army for 72 hours and killed 300 soldiers. He used to run from one bunker to other and continuously fired at Chinese army. It is said that two local girls Sela and Nura helped him by supplying arms and ammunition of the dead soldiers. Chinese thought there is a group of Indian troops as a result of continuous firing from different bunkers. They then changed their strategy and surrounded Jaswant Singh from all the sides. It is also said that Chinese captured the man who was supplying him rations and he told them there is only one man in bunkers. Chinese attacked with full force. It is believed Sela died in grenade blast while they captured Nura. Jawant Singh’s was captured and hanged by Chinese with the help of telephone wire. They were so frustrated by the fact that from past 72 hours only one man was troubling them and killed more than 300 Chinese soldiers. So they chopped his head and took it back to China. After ceasefire, Chinese commander returned his head along with brass bust to honour the bravery of Jawant Singh. The bust is installed at battle site known as Jaswantgarh. Near Jaswant Memorial there is also a temple of Jaswant Baba. Telephone wire and the tree which witnessed the valor of this brave heart Indian soldier are still there. Five army soldiers are at his service all the time. Every Indian soldier passed by this route offer prayer to baba. They believe baba still exists and truck drivers also offer prayer for their safe journey. Army arranges for tea and food for the entire passerby. Before serving to others, he is first served morning tea at 4:30am, breakfast at 9am and dinner at 7 pm. It is believed that if you are visiting Jaswant Baba’s temple you should polish his shoes. Whatever are the stories but I to want salute this Brave Heart Indian Soldier Jaswant Singh for his valor and ultimate sacrifice. He has received all his promotion after his martyrdom like a serving soldier and reached the rank of Captain before retiring.
