True, the time to fully explain things to patients and their family are instead spent on documenting to be sure that the institution will get be reimbursed for the services given. As said, we nurses define our own practice but none have came to realized that we have gradually taken away the true essence of nursing care from our profession. The term we know as bedside nursing is now spent mostly in making sure that everything is in compliance with the standards set and that everything is accurately documented too. Good to know that a hospital finally admitted this. The goal is right but the approach is questionable. How can a robot show empathy? Just switch the roles, let the robot document by teaching it to take dictations which in turn will allow the nurse to provide the much needed nursing care, empathy included. Believe me, this will increase patient satisfaction which is also one of the common problems we see these days. Technology should be used to assist people, NOT replace them. Or are we entering the TERMINATOR era?!?
