“Trust but verify” I am not sure who invented this term but - TopicsExpress

“Trust but verify” I am not sure who invented this term but in Crime Prevention it couldn’t be truer. If I had 10 cents for every scam I heard about I could retire early! At the root of these scams is trust. We trust that the person we are dealing with is going to do what they promise. Recently, when I was doing some research into a national charity, I put the” trust but verify” into practice. It started by me seeing a national charity advertized on a large cable network. The charity seemed to be a great one. It really tugged at my heart strings. In the back of my head I kept asking myself “How can they afford to advertize on this network?” So I did a little research. What I found was amazing. I went to a free charity rating site and saw that the charity received 4 out of 5 stars. When I looked at the statistics for the organization it said that nearly 40% of the money they spent was on advertizing. Wow, not what I would say is 4 out of 5 stars. Although their administrative costs were low, which is good, I felt that their fundraising costs were way out of line. When doing your verification, be thorough and don’t trust everything you read. There are many places on the internet that provide ratings. Don’t follow those ratings blindly. A little extra effort can mean the difference between making your donation work well and your donation working great. Dave Schmitz Crime Prevention Officer Green Bay Police
