Truth Without Sugar Matthew 8:1-4…Well it is not surprising that when Jesus was coming down from the mountain that His first encounter was with a leper. If you compare the leper’s desire with the beatitudes it fits very nicely. Now the aspect of leprosy was a representation of sin and what it can do to you. Just like sin leprosy will slowly eat away at your body, you lose feeling in your extremities, your fingers and toes don’t fall of but when you can’t feel them anymore you are more likely to lose them. Just like sin that numbs us and slowly eats away at our body and soul. Picture this, this outcast of a man on the outskirts of the meeting and listening to Jesus, listening to the only One who offered him hope, (picture him in your mind) This man probably heard the message of the beatitudes, heard the prayer of “Our father who are in heaven”, this man surly understood anxiety and worry hearing the words of Ch. 6:27 of “who among you by being worried can add a single hour to his life” (He didn’t want to die) and then vs. 33 “seek first the kingdom”. At this point he was (I’m sure) asking, seeking, and knocking and was willing to go through that narrow gate, realizing that he was not on a firm foundation, pushing towards Jesus as He left. Picture this whole scenario can you feel the hope and relief that this man hearing and feeling? Then, by the hope and encouragement of the words of Jesus, he asked the Lord…… “Lord, if you are willing……. you can make me clean”…. WOW! This is such an amazing picture and statement of faith and Jesus’ reply (again feel this man’s release) Jesus said “I am willing.” There is nothing more to say here. Jesus is willing to cleanse us from everything all we have to do is ask as this man did. Jesus is always willing my friends.
