Trying this again. Cynthia Elbaum, freelance photographer for The Boston Globe among others, killed 20 years ago today, in an airstrike in Grozny, Chechnya. That second shot was taken from the roll in her camera. She wanted to tell the story of the rebellion that, back in Dec. 1994, looked so different from what it later became. At the time, the story was lightly-armed rebels seeking to free their republic from the brutal Russian juggernaut, a narrative reinforced by the things we saw, such as guys with assault rifles and grenades taking out tanks in the streets of Grozny (photo credit: AP specials) -- and seemingly indiscriminate airstrikes, such as the one that killed Cynthia.
