Trying to gather my thoughts after todays attack on Charlie Hebdo - TopicsExpress

Trying to gather my thoughts after todays attack on Charlie Hebdo in Paris: As the founder of Duffel Blog, I am incredibly thankful for my right to free speech and exercise it daily. We criticize the military, Pentagon bloat, dumb regulations, and yes, occasionally, Muslim extremists. So its not that far outside the realm of possibility that I (or anyone associated with me) could be attacked for the simple act of writing. Freedom of speech is arguably the most important right we enjoy. Throughout human existence, people have been subjugated, oppressed, and kept in darkness. Freedom of speech is the light. It shines on the bad, the problems of the world, tyrants, and the unjust treatment of the oppressed. Without it, we are lost. You may not agree with my (or others) writing, opinions, or artwork, but the key to fighting against speech you disagree with is in more speech. It does not come from the barrel of a gun. In the wake of todays attack, I can only hope that Charlie Hebdo mourns its dead, honors their legacy, and continues doing exactly what it has done since 1970. Free speech should always trump fear. Je Suis Charlie.
