Tuesday TIp: Tis the Season (Pt.2). I was at the gym last last night and guess what one of my workout buddies asked me? Yep the computer gift question. Well to continue from last week. How much power, speed, memory, storage, etc ? As Ive stated before, Im not Mac savvy enough to state what I might recommend but even with both PC and MAC (Not getting into Linux here). It still goes back to the magic word depends . As an IT guy in my heart, my answer is Well you need an I-7 with 20mb cache, 32MB RAMM, Windows 64-bit, with a solid-state drive with 4TB storage and a 32 in monitor minimum.. but really 95% of the average users does not need that kind of muscle! That letter/term paper/novel is going to get written any faster whether you have a 2.5GHz dual-core or 3.9mhz 6-core processor. As a general rule, you should always try to get the biggest bang for your buck with room to grow. My first computer that I bought was a Packard Bell 8MB of RAMM and a huge 350MB hard drive and a 66mhz processor. This would be all I would ever need... Software is primarily what fuels spending for big hardware. If you look closely at software packaging (particularly Windows) you will see the system requirements to run that bundle but youll see on many packed suggested hardware. Think of it like this, a gallon of gas is required to crank your car but it is suggested that you fill up! With that in mind on average most bundles only require 2-4GB RAMM and 20-30GB of storage and Dual Core technology and CD/DVD ROM drive. which you can get a machine to take care of this for around $250. Sounds good, right? DONT FALL FOR IT. Remember what I said about software and my first PC? Although tempting, you end up trading or selling it or upgrading a lot sooner than you intended. Videos and music also takes a large amount of your storage so that $250 deal with a 500GB storage starts filling up quickly! I found a great chart that breaks it down below courtesy of PC Ninja. What should I pay then? Well, see Pt 3 of this unintended trilogy. :)
