Tuesday in the WPAC Region and winter continues to pound parts of the north, while the warmer climes stay sticky and humid. The chill is definitely on to the north, where Beijing hit a low of-7C and Tokyo settled in at a mere 3C. A little farther south, the air is a little more moderate, but still brisk with Hong Kong, Taipei and Hanoi all reaching 16C minimums overnight. In the south, cooler than previous weeks, but still quite warm and humid as Manila, and Ho Chi Minh temperatures sank to 24C. Looking out to the east in the tropics it’s warm and moist as usual with all island stations reporting cozy overnight lows of 27C. A very significant winter weather event is poised to pound Japan over the next 24-48 hours. A big double-barrel low pressure system is bringing in the snow and ice, VERY high winds, and VERY cold temperatures in from Siberia. Parts of China are already reflecting this with lows in the -10 to -20 range well inland. In the tropics, there is nothing of any concern out there at this time. The system formerly known as 97W has dissipated, and will move into the southern Philippines bringing and increased chance for rain and the hazards that may accompany brief heavy rainfall. Also, a surprise return of 96W’s remnants, which after crossing the Philippines, were pushed back down to the SW in the monsoonal surge. This disturbance will affect parts of southern Vietnam over the next 26 hours. Long-range outlooks are starting to show a significant rain event in the Philippines sometime just after Christmas. It’s still quite early, but the models have been pretty consistent in showing this event or the past three days. We’ll keep watchin’ things for you. Have a great Tuesday! Courtesy: CIMSS
