Tuesday is intake day here at ACE. We have a strict screening process to eliminate people who are not committed to making a change in their lives. The first step is to fill out paperwork and make sure that they meet the basic criteria: They have housing. They dont have a violent or aggressive criminal history. Applicants need to be able to lift, stand and walk for a 4 hour shift. They must be a US citizen and at least 21 years of age. Next, they sit through orientation to hear about the program and what will be expected of them. After, they have a one one-on-one with our Program Director, Liz, who reviews their application and tries to get a feel for how serious they are about working hard, following the rules and fulfilling the daily responsibilities. Candidates are then informed if theyre accepted or not. Those who are will have a three week period of shadowing a participant who is currently working on the crew. They will return on Thursday for placement testing in our English and Math classes. At the end of the three weeks, or maybe even during that time, it becomes apparent if they are committed to the program and will be offered to enroll. It is then that the journey at ACE begins to unfold!
