Tuesdays Teasers! Excerpt from WINGS OF THUNDER: “Ivy!” Gabe called in warning, but it was too late. I lost the swoop-swish rhythm. One of my skis scraped against the other, jarring me. I flailed for balance. From the corner of my eye I saw Gabe reaching for my arm, but I was too far away. I fell like a snowflake—except not. I crunched the snow with a curse and a painful jumble of limbs. I’d landed on top of one of the poles, and it dug into my side. “So much for not falling,” I muttered. Gabe leaned over me, blocking the onslaught of snow. “Are you hurt?” “I didn’t break a leg, so that’s always a plus.” I rolled to the side and dislodged the pole from my ribcage. Then I loosened my death-grip on the other pole so I could push myself into a sitting position. My skis were crossed and pointing at the sky like a giant X. When I tried to uncross them, I only succeeded in getting more tangled. “I never thought I’d seriously say this until I was ninety years old . . . but I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.”
