Tuesdays scene of the day: This weeks theme is Chow Yun-fat is Actually Incredibly Cool. A Better Tomorrow 2, the 1987 sequel to the film that made Chow Yun-fat a star, enjoys a degree of infamy among fans of Hong Kong action movies. Directed reluctantly by John Woo (hes since disowned the movie as it currently exists), it largely eschews the stately, operatic drama of its superior predecessor and doubles down on high-bodycount action scenes and histrionic performances. The result is awesome and silly in equal measure. Case in point: Chow is playing Ken Gor, a hard-headed Hong Kong expatriate living in New York where he runs a Chinese restaurant. One day, hes confronted by racketeers trying to squeeze him for a cut of his profits. The scene that ensues is the perfect storm of mangled English, overacting and supreme Coolness.
