As part of an effort to encourage young scientists to be part of this vision, the annual Eureka awards celebrate young science orators, and Veronika Meduna meets some of them as they compete for the top prize. rnz.to/1wkP3Yo USING 1080 TO FIGHT PREDATORS AND SAVE NATIVE BIRDS Battle for our Birds is the largest-ever pest-control operation in New Zealand, and it’s using aerial drops of the toxin 1080 across 700,000 hectares of conservation land to protect native birds from a plague of rats, mice and stoats following mass seeding in beech forests. Alison Ballance heads to South Westland, to find out about a long-running research programme by the Department of Conservation investigating the effectiveness of 1080 treatment in protecting native birds. She also talks with Landcare Research toxicologist Penny Fisher, and joins a 1080 drop in the Tongariro Conservation Area designed to protect kiwi and whio populations. rnz.to/1wkPu57
