We call ourselves a democratic nation so why is it that whenever a group exercises their right to protest that our first instinct is to denigrate them? Martin Luther King followed Gandhis call for non-violence and yet was labeled a dangerous subversive and a communist. Many still refer to Nelson Mandela as a terrorist though he preached peace following his release from prison. There is no evidence that the I Cant Breathe and Black Lives Matter movements caused the murders of the two police officers in New York and yet they are being blamed for it. Even before that people were blasting them and a former New York Police Department official was saying that the protestors had to be silenced. There comes a time when things reach the boiling point where they cannot be silenced and instead of trying to silence it we need to engage in meaningful conversation rather than blaming everybody around us but ourselves.
