#Turkey #17ağustos1999 - 15 years ago today -17 August 1999- we lost nearly 50,000 of our people, our friends in a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in just 45 seconds. May God bless their souls. We all remember those days and how it led to instant national solidarity and cohesion. Disasters are such times when political conflicts lose their meaning in every respect, and people begin to see each other first as human rather than dissidents or others. A New York Times headline after this massive disaster was: Earthquakes Help Warm Greek-Turkish Relations (September 13, 1999) and another one was: Quake Relief Shows Israel Feels Deeply For Turkey (August 28, 1999). Israel was one of the first who sent sophisticated rescue teams, field hospital and tons of eid at that time. We are grateful to our neighbours and to all who succoured us at those times; their good deeds are never forgotten.
