Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye), officially the Republic of Turkey; is a contiguous transcontinental country, located mostly on Anatolia in Western Asia, and on East Thrace in Southeastern Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Iran and the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea is to the south; the Aegean Sea is to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. The Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles demarcate the boundary between Thrace and Anatolia; they also separate Europe and Asia. Turkeys location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia makes it a country of significant geostrategic importance. Ankara is the capital of Turkey. Turkeys territory is divided into 81 provinces for administrative purposes. The provinces are organized in 7 regions for census purposes, but they do not represent the management structure. Each province is divided into districts, for a total of 923 counties). The city of Istanbul, Turkeys largest city in terms of population (13 million people), followed by Ankara (5 million), İzmir (4 million) and Bursa (3 million) and Adana (2 million). Turkey is a democratic, secular, unitary, constitutional republic with a diverse cultural heritage. The countrys official language is Turkish. The vast majority of the population is Muslim. Turkey is the worlds 37th-largest country in terms of area. Turkey is divided into seven census regions: Marmara, Aegean, Black Sea, Central Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia, Southeastern Anatolia and the Mediterranean.
