Two CNAs from Palm Gardens Nursing Home have been arrested and charged with battery of an elderly person after they are captured on video tormenting and hitting a 76 year-old Alzheimers patient. On 10-29-14, police arrested 28 year-old Yashika Zenobiaha Jones (2401 2nd St., Winter Haven) and 35 year-old Rose Dorlean Blaise (1013 Ave. M, NE, Winter Haven) after an investigation uncovered the abuse on three separate occasions in October. Dale Wilson, the 53 year-old son of the 76 year-old victim, made a report to the staff at Palm Gardens Nursing Home (1120 Cypress Gardens Blvd, SE, Winter Haven) in early October after noticing unusual bruising on his fathers arms and legs. His father is in the advanced stages of Alzheimers and is unable to communicate. The staff was unable to explain the marks on the patient. Fearing his father was being abused, Wilson set up a nanny cam inside of the victims room pointed directly at the bed. Wilson would frequently check the footage and found at least three incidents in October that showed staff members taunting and hitting the victim. Reviewing the footage, incidents recorded were on 10-7-14, 10-16-24 and 10-24-14. Jones is seen in the incidents on 10-7 and 10-24. Blaise is seen in the 10-16 incident. On 10-7-14, Jones and another CNA, 28 year-old Oreal Motley (DOB1-9-86, 318 Kokomo Rd., Lake Hamilton FL) are tending to the victim when Jones is seen rubbing her hand across the victims face, which obviously disturbs him. Jones is then seen making punching motions towards the victims face in an obvious attempt to agitate him further. In the 10-16 incident, Blaise and 51 year-old CNA Victoria Anucha (DOB 1-20-63, 1646 Merrimack Cir., Davenport FL) are transferring the victim from a wheelchair to his bed. During the transfer, the victim became agitated and began flailing his arms. Anucha is seen trying to calm the victim. However Blaise is observed stepping back and lunging toward the victim using her legs and feet to either stomp on his bare feet or kick him in the leg. The victim is obviously in pain as he responds by leaning forward and reaching towards his legs. Once in a prone position on the bed, Blaise is then seen throwing the victims legs over to one side as he is being repositioned on the bed. Finally, in the recorded 10-24 incident, Jones is once again seen in the room tending to the victim with fellow CNA Daphnee Louissaint (DOB 4-30-93, 314 Towhee Rd., Winter Haven) as they are changing the victims clothes. Jones is seen making punching motions with a closed fist towards the victims face. Jones then grabs the victims wrists and the victim struggles trying to pull away from Jones. Jones is then seen grabbing the victim by the wrists and forcing him to punch himself in the face with his own hands. Jones then moves to the foot of the bed and grabs hold of his ankles holding his legs down to keep him from sitting up. Jones is then seen approaching the head of the bed making a motion as if to slap the victim in the face. When the victim puts his hand up in an obvious attempt to shield his face, Jones grabs his wrist, slaps the victim in the face with her other hand and then quickly runs away as the victim attempts to sit up. This egregious behavior from these two who are supposed to be caring for our infirm is absolutely sickening, said Chief Charlie Bird. There is absolutely no reason for any person, especially an elderly Alzheimer patient, to be treating like this and today those two workers are paying for their actions. Jones was taken into custody and booked into the Polk County Jail on two counts of Battery of an Elderly Person (F-3) and Blaise was charged with one count of Battery on the Elderly (F-3), both being held without bond.
